17 days to go

All this gorgeous yarn is arriving and I have so much to do, I don’t have time to get my hands on it and start a project. But… the Blue Sky Alpaca is here and is calling to me… . I have been dying to make a Baby Bobbi Bear. Wouldn’t you know that the pattern calls for a needle size that I don’t have in my personal collection and none of the needles I ordered for the store have arrived?! So here I am with a problem; I am opening a yarn shop and need to go buy needles in order to make a display item! I will console myself by making the Blue Sky Opera Scarf out of their Alpaca and Silk (my absolute favorite fiber combination.)

16 days to go

The trials and tribulations of starting your own business: today, I discover that the first round of business cards I so cleverly made had the wrong phone number printed on them!! Oh, well. That’s why I only printed a handful. Next time, the proofing will be a bit more stringent!
16 days until we open…

12 days to go

The Jo Sharp yarn is here!!!!! DK wool, Silkroad, Kid Mohair. And the patternbooks – wow! There are simply not enough hours in the day. I would love to get started on her Sunday cabled throw in the Home collection. Perhaps that will be one of my winter projects.

11 days to go

Update on the shop… we are making great progress in getting things set up. My mom is here today helping check in inventory (thanks Mom!!). Peter and the boys are working on the computer set up. Well, Peter is working, the boys are keeping themselves entertained on the big red couch with some DVDs and the laptop. We accomplished a lot over the weekend. My baby sister, Becka, and her boyfriend David, traveled from Vermont to spend the weekend helping me inventory yarn. And… Becka has agreed to come work in the shop this fall. YEAH!!! She has an amazing sense of color so you’ll have to stop by and see her displays. She arranged the Cascade 220 yarns over the weekend and they look great.

9 days to go

Well, yesterday was an interesting day! I learned an important lesson – taking a 2 ½ year old to work is not necessarily a good idea. Alec came down with a cold so we decided to keep him home from daycare and he and Connor joined Mommy at the shop for the morning. Somehow the cold didn’t affect his energy level and he proceeded to dump apple juice all over Peter’s laptop – to the point where juice was running out the side when I tried to clean it up. Not good. While I’m busy with the laptop, Alec runs over to the sink and starts shaking the newly installed plumbing, and manages to spring a leak. Luckily, he had just loosened a bolt or something and Peter managed to fix that one. Finally, Alec finished off the morning by pulling all the newly stocked Debbie Bliss cashmerino off the shelves. Needless to say, we both needed a good nap!

I finished the Blue Sky Alpaca Opera scarf (a free pattern available on their website and at our shop) and it looks great. The pattern calls for size 8 US needles, but I had to use US 9 to get the correct gauge. Right now, I am working on a scarf of my own design in Classic Elite’s Posh – a cashmere silk blend that is a treat to knit with. It is so soft, it just glides through your fingers. I’m going to have a hard time using this scarf as a shop model and not wearing it!

5 days to go

4 ½ days until we open!! It doesn’t quite seem possible. Last week, I was convinced that we wouldn’t be ready, but we worked all weekend – Mom came down on Saturday (Thank you!!!!) – and the shop is really coming together.

On top of that, I found some time to knit up a Blue Sky Alpaca Baby Bobbi Bear. He just needs his ears, nose and eyes. Anyone who has seen the pattern can tell you how cute this little bear is, but that is nothing compared to actually making one. I choose to knit it in the organic cotton and he is incredibly soft and cuddly. I want to make one for both my boys!

As the news of our store spreads, more and more people are asking what inspired me to open a knitting shop. Did I always dream of having a little yarn shop? Have I always been a knitter?

While I learned to knit when I was quite young, and helped my mom, who did production machine knitting when I was growing up, I only knitted sporadically from high school on until a few years ago. This shop is really a product of what has happened in my life over the past three years.

So here it is… The story of The Knitting Experience Café…

On May 15, 2002, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer at the age of 28. This was four days before Connor’s third birthday and exactly one month after discovering that I was pregnant with Alec. I was terrified. Could I have this little baby that we wanted so much? Would I be around to see Connor celebrate his fourth birthday? The days and weeks after my diagnosis became a blur of doctors appointments, tests, and finally surgery. I received amazing care from my surgeon and OB/GYN who gave me the confidence to believe that everything was going to be ok for me and the baby. Ultimately, that little baby ended up saving my life. Because I was pregnant, I did not have the option of a lumpectomy and radiation. I had to have the mastectomy and as a result, they found a second tumor in the deep tissue that otherwise might have gone undetected. Alec, whose name means “defender,” had saved me, and came through the surgery beautifully. Right after the surgery, they brought in the fetal monitor to check for his heartbeat, and there it was, loud and clear. He continued to be a source of strength for me throughout the pregnancy. I had this wonderful distraction from all the big “C” stuff of this new little person who kept pushing me on.

But, he wasn’t the only one getting me through those early months. Peter and Connor were amazing. Little Connor, at only three years old, tried to make Mommy comfortable after she got home from the hospital by bringing her slippers or giving a very careful hug. Peter was, and continues to be, my rock – always saying that everything will be fine and refusing to entertain any other possibility.

And then came the knitting. My mom stayed with us at various times when I was recovering. On one of those trips she brought a book about a young woman with cancer who found solace in knitting and opened her own yarn shop. I think I read that book in less than a day and then Mom and I hit the local craft store for needles and yarn. I finished a sweater in a week and have been knitting like crazy every since. Last year, Connor asked, “Mommy, are you ever NOT knitting?”

I had discovered how relaxing and peaceful knitting could be - life just seems to slow down a bit. Through this timeless craft, you connect with others, with the natural world, and in the end, come out with something that you’ve made yourself.

As my yarn stash grew and library of knitting books overflowed their shelf on the bookcase, I started thinking how nice it would be to have a yarn shop. To spend my days surrounded by yarn and sharing the gift knitting has given me with others – to just slow down for a minute.

This past April, I mentioned my little dream to Peter after I had come home from a particularly stressful business trip. To my great surprise, he said, “OK, why not?” And here we are a little over 4 months later!

So that is the short version of how this all came to be.

3 days to go!

I can't believe it is Wednesday already! On the one hand, I can't wait for Saturday and finally have the shop open, on the other hand, it seems like we just have soooo much to do before we'll be ready. One recent bump in the road has changed our plans a bit. We didn't get all our paperwork into the state for our cafe license in time for the inspections and everything to happen by Saturday, so the cafe part of the shop will be delayed a bit in opening. Hopefully, everything will come through soon and we can start offering tea next week.

Ok, I must share a small annoyance of the past few days. At some point a fly got in here and keeps trying to land on my head! I thought they only lived for 24 hours or something, but we're going on day number 3, and he's definitely worn out his welcome.

The Classic Elite Posh scarf is almost done - just another couple of rows and then I can cast off. I think I am going to have to order some of this yarn to make another scarf for myself. You would not believe how soft it is!

Time to get back to setting things up. I still have some Noro and and Debbie Bliss Soho that needs to be entered into the computer and more is scheduled to arrive any day! Oh - for those of you who haven't seen Debbie Bliss's new yarn, Soho, I think you will love it! 100% wool in the most amazing colors and textures. Her patterns, as always, are beautiful. It was actually one of the patterns for Soho that convinced me to buy the yarn. It is a little hooded sweater for a young girl. My next project will be to knit that up as a store model. I can't wait!

Stalking UPS

I am at the point where I am practically stalking UPS - and FedEx, for that matter! My books from Interweave Press and most of my Noro and Debbie Bliss yarns reportedly shipped last week and should be arriving any day. So I've been watching out the window for the trucks all week, and every day have been disappointed as they sailed by the shop. Perhaps tomorrow...

Emily came in today with this most adorable little yellow baby hat knit out of Cascade's Fixation to use as a store sample.  Thank you!! Emily is an amazing knitter and bears some of the responsibility for my yarn obsession and new career path.

For those who haven't tried Fixation - it is a remarkable yarn. With 98.3% cotton and 1.7% elastic, it makes a great sock yarn, baby yarn, or whatever you can think up that needs a little stretch to it.

One more full day to go before we officially open the doors. Peter has spent the day tweaking the database, I spent the morning ordering more yarn (yeah!!! details to come...), and Connor got to go to the library. He got the coolest book on dinosaurs that has life-sized pictures of dinosaur heads and such. The T-Rex jaws were quite startling. Little Alec is spending the day with his friends at daycare to give Mommy a chance to get the yarn arranged without his "help."

We’re open!!!!!

We're open!

Day 2

I'm sorry that I didn't get a chance to write anything yesterday, but that is all for a good reason. We had a fabulous opening day and were busy for most of the day. It was so wonderful to have so many friends and family stop by to cheer us on! My grandparents and aunts and uncle drove 3 hours to see the shop and my grandmother ordered a custom made pillow. How's that for family support?

Mom and dad took turns helping us out. There is an absolutely hilarious story about Dad coming down here that Mom made me swear not to put on the blog. Too bad, really, because I almost died from laughing when I heard it. Peter's parents gave us the best present in the world of watching the boys for the day and they are taking them again this afternoon. My younger brother Jason, and his wife Andrea, sent us the prettiest flowers to celebrate our opening day. And we got a surprise visit from Brad's parents from Ohio. (Brad is a good friend from my grad school days at William and Mary.)

We also had a number of people NOT related to us stop in and check out the store. Brunswick is a wonderful community and the support and encouragement we have received has been amazing. Many people expressed an interest in Thursdays' Knit at Night so I am excited that we may get a strong community knitting group going. Others came in with suggestions for classes that I think will be great additions to the schedule we are already planning.

All in all, it was a wonderful, if not exhausting day. After retrieving the children last night, Peter and I mindlessly devoured a pizza and collapsed. But, thanks to Peter's famous (at least in our family) Sunday morning waffles, our energy is back and we are ready to do it all over again!

First full week

First full week

Our first full week is off to a great start! Minus a small mishap yesterday. We were having a system installed and the guy installing it hit the wrong wire and shorted out our power. Sparks flew dramatically, but luckily he was not hurt and we did get things back in working order before too long!

I didn't get a chance to share a great new addition to our shop before the opening - knitting bags exclusively designed for The Knitting Experience Café by Mainely Totes.
5438
They are flying off the shelf - I just had to put in another order. And it is no wonder why. They were designed by a local artisan, who is also a knitter. The bags are made of a great fabric, that is soft to the touch, but sturdy enough to stand up so that you can knit right from the bag! They have 3 interior pockets - one that is the perfect size pattern books, and two for your needles and notions.  New fabric and color choices will be coming soon, so make sure to stop by and check them out.

Yesterday was only our third official day being open and we sold out of the Baby Bobbi Bear pattern, not to mention selling a great deal of the Blue Sky Alpacas organic cotton. But, not to worry, I placed a new order with Blue Sky this morning. In a few days will we have plenty of Baby Bobbi Bear patterns, as well as the pattern for the original Bobbi Bear. I am curious to see this pattern myself. It is knit with Blue Sky's Bulky Alpaca and Wool and is much larger than the baby bear. We have a great selection of colors in the Bulky Alpaca coming in so get ready to make the Bobbi Bear!

For those who read Interweave Magazine (Fall 2005) and noticed the beautiful sweater knit in Blue Sky's Alpaca and Silk (pg. 34), I have been waiting to get in the color - slate - featured in the pattern. It has been on backorder, but according to Blue Sky, should be shipping out this week. We do already have 6 other colors in the Alpaca and Silk that would look great for this sweater.

Connor is keeping me company today so there are sounds of various computer game blasts going off in the background. As soon as I get some of my paperwork taken care of, we're going to work on getting him started knitting. I can't wait to see what yarns attract his interest!
