The Knitting Experience Blog Archive January 2008

Assignments are out

The assassins all have their targets and the guidelines for the game.  Now, they just have to wait until Friday night when the pattern gets posted.  For anyone interested in knitting along, I'll be putting the pattern here on the blog at 11:59pm on Friday, Feb. 1st.

Each player also received a list of the game rules and of the prize categories.  Thanks to Lisa at One City Market, Scott, Amy, and a few goodies we'll be throwing in, there are a lot of very nice prizes to be won.

Scott and Amy will be helping me judge and here are the categories to-date:

1. First kill.  The prize goes to the first assassin to successfully
deliver their deadly socks to their target.

2. Most creative sock delivery

3. Most creative sock embellishment

4. Most patriotic sock embellishment

5. Most uncomfortable socks.  The prize goes to the recipient of the
most uncomfortable socks.  This time the targets get to submit nominees

6. Wackiest player.  The prize goes to... well... I'm not sure yet, but
we'll know it when we see it.

Phew! I'm taking the rest of the night off from battle prep.  Time for a little knitting and spinning.

The shop has been crazy busy lately.

Marcia was in on Tuesday and wearing the incredibly gorgeous gansey she had just finished.
IMG_3008
She used Cascade 220 for the sweater and Twilley's Freedom Spirit for this scarf:
IMG_3011
Tuesday also brought the UPS truck and our newest sock yarn: Trekking!! In both Trekking XXL and Pro Natura ( a wool/bamboo blend).
IMG_3014
IMG_3015
I had forgotten to tell you about the 3 new Noro Kureyon Sock colors that arrived last week:
IMG_3016
As well as Kid Seta from Madil Yarns:
IMG_3019
I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this yarn.  It is a kid mohair and silk blend, with about 230yds per skein.  It looks and feels like a little piece of heaven.

Of course, I HAD to try it out and Becka found the perfect pattern for me - A Scarf for Ally.  The design is a simple lace repeat, knit on US 10.5 needles, and the whole project took 1 skein!

IMG_3021
The yarn is so light, it only took a couple hours to dry after blocking.
IMG_3005IMG_3006
The first of my fingerless mitts is done.  I've been wanting a pair of these since the Fetching craze, but somehow never got around to it. Then Dashing came out and I knew those were perfect for me.  I am using Noro Cash Iroha.
IMG_3028
And whenever I can sneak a free moment (or stay up well past any reasonable bedtime) I spin.

Look at the pretty, pretty yarn! A little out of focus -sorry.
IMG_3026
It is all going into this afghan-

44 knitters ready to do battle!

Including Wendy who just finished her Rogue. ( I know this has nothing to do with the Battle of the Soxes, but I am tremendously proud of her - yay Wendy!!)

Rogue - unblocked
Peter and I spent last night getting all the enlisted battlers into the computer.  He set up his fancy computer program thing  to make random assignments, pushed the button and 44 assassins were created.

In the next 48 hours we will be sending out assignments and critical Battle of the Soxes information to the email address you provided.  Since we want to share the fun with everyone, I'll be posting regular updates on the blog, so check in with us here as well.

For instance, this is not something that I would send in an email.  The Maine players are proposing a kick-off party for Friday night at The Sea Dog in Topsham.  Players and supporters are all welcome.  I believe the idea is to gather for dinner and drinks around 8pm, knit until 11:59pm to keep the fingers limber, then grab the pattern and start the hunt.  If you are interested in joining us, let me know so I can get a rough head count.  (We want to give the poor people at The Sea Dog a little advance warning that a bunch of bloodthirsty knitters are heading their way.)
Bridget has alerted me to the possibility that there may be snow/sleet/general unpleasantness on Friday night.  If that is the case, perhaps we switch the party to Saturday evening and cheer each other on. Maybe there will be a "delivery" across the table...

Get ready knitters, the fun is about to begin.

I hinted that a few details on the coming battle may be released early and I don't want to disappoint our enlisted combatants.

Amy decided to make the sock pattern as flexible as possible to allow each knitter to truly express themselves, and has written it for 3 different yarn weights: worsted, sport/dk, and fingering.

That's right. You have a decision to make.

Do you go with worsted for the sake of speed?

Or do you pick an interesting fingering weight, knit faster, and try for one of the random prizes (prize categories to be leaked later)?

What is your battle strategy?

Whatever you chose, you need to know how much yarn.

Yarn requirements: Worsted - 240yds Sport/DK - 320 yds Fingering weight - 400 yds

I am very curious to see what people decide.

Now for a little Knit at Night replay. We had a full house and I think I may have enlisted a few more players (Sara? Beth? Kim? Liz?).

Alva was looking fabulous in her newly finished Blizzard Stole.

IMG_2981
Sandy made a beautiful pair of socks from Lorna's Laces for a very lucky friend.
IMG_2983
And Kim finished her first pair of socks!! Yay, Kim!  When I met her, she was struggling with hats, now she whips up anything you put in her hands.  She is a natural.

I leave you with a few shots from around the room:

January Newsletter and SALE

Hello Everyone,

We have exciting news at The Knitting Experience Café. To entertain ourselves through the winter months, we are hosting a Battle of the Soxes!

Have you ever played the game Assassin?  Battle of the Soxes takes assassin and puts a knitter’s spin on it.  The weapon is socks.  For a complete description of the game, see this blog entry .

Any knitter who would like to play is welcome to join the fun.  We will have random contests throughout the game to give us an excuse to handout prizes.  To play, just email me before midnight on Saturday, January 26 at battle@theknittingexperience.com.  Include your name, email, snail mail address, and shoe/sock size.  The game begins at 11:59pm on February 1st when the pattern is released.

Since socks are becoming our theme for the winter, we need to have a sale to celebrate!  This Saturday, January 26 our favorite sock yarns will be 15% OFF both in store and online. This includes:

Spunky Eclectic
Lornas Laces
Alpaca Sox
Noro Kureyon Sock
On Your Toes
Cascade Fixation

While you are preparing for battle, don’t forget to check out the winter class schedule.  The Magic Loop class is already full so we are planning another session for early spring.  A few spots remain in the Time to Finish and Beginner Fair Isle classes.  I am very pleased to announce that we just added a beginner lace class on February 9 and 16.

Enjoy these beautiful winters days and good luck to all the knitting assassins!

30 and counting

As of this blog entry, 30 assassins from all over the country have registered for our Battle of the Soxes

Can you hear the sharpening of the needles? I do believe we have the makings of a great game.

The strategy sessions have already begun.  Some are planning naps for friday afternoon on Feb 1st so they can knit through the night. Others are stocking up on FedEx boxes so they can ship the killer socks the moment they come off the needles.

You still have time to join in on the fun.  Registration is open until midnight on Sat. Jan 26th. If you want to have a fabulous time and work out a little aggression with some murderous knitting, email me at battle@theknittingexperience.com.  Include your name, email, snail mail address, and shoe/sock size.

More updates to come.

In the meantime, I need to catch you up on the latest arrivals from UPS.

LOTS of books.  Including one I have been not so patiently waiting for-

IMG_2973
I was not disappointed.  It truly is the ultimate guide to yarn, and includes an incredible number of beautiful patterns.

Other arrivals are a mix of restocking of fast sellers and new titles:
IMG_2972IMG_2976
IMG_2977IMG_2978
You've been asking for awhile so I am thrilled to tell you that we now have the magnet boards to help you keep track of your place in lace and cable charts.
IMG_2975
Oh, and I have been knitting.  Lots of knitting but no time to share right now.  Back to war planning.

Battle of the Soxes Update

Battle of the Soxes Update

Before I get into the impending war, I have to share a personal victory.

I finished Peter's sweater!

Stop doubting.  I really did it.  And I have the picture to prove it.

IMG_2964
Looks pretty good, hun?  Luckily, it fits beautifully and he really seems to like it.  He even wore it to work.  Almost makes me want to start another one. Almost.

Ok, onto the Battle of the Soxes.

Things are already getting a bit vicious as Missouri has thrown down a challenge to the Maine contingent.  We have at least one player from CA and one from TN.  Any other states want to get in on the game and represent their killer skills?

Lisa, from One City Market in Missouri, is generously donating a number of exceedingly cool prizes for the random contests we will be having throughout the battle.

Amy, of Spunky Eclectic fame, is my hero, and has very generously offered to design an original pattern just for our battle!! I've seen the finished product and you will not be disappointed.  It is very approachable for all the newbies, yet interesting for the most experienced.  Amy is also doing something unique with the pattern to allow for a bit more flexibility in knitting.  I'll keep you guessing on that a bit longer.

Scott, who most of you know is now deployed with the Navy and is therefore a bit too far away to play, has volunteered to assist me and Amy with the judging.  He is also working on a surprise prize for one of the contests.

Many have already registered, but over a week remains to sign up.  All knitters willing to accept the challenge are welcome to play.  Feel free to tell your knitting friends about the game and encourage them to join.

One small change to the original plan - the start of the game is now 11:59pm EST on Feb 1st.  This will allow the majority of players (those who do not have to work on Saturday) to stay up all night hunting down their victims.  There has been talk of kick-off parties at both The Knitting Experience and One City Market on Feb 1st.  I'll post details when I have them.

Oh, and I'm thinking we need a button to represent The Battle of the Soxes.  What do you think? Any ideas?

Now for a little knitting update.

Patty, who recently took a fair isle class with the incredible Beth, stopped in to show me her first fair isle sweater and hat. Lovely.
IMG_2958IMG_2959
Ashlin came in with a beautiful cardigan that she had just completed.  I love the addition of the sash.
IMG_2961
Another knitter took on the Aran sweater challenge with beautiful results:
IMG_2963
And this morning, Harriet stopped by to show us the messenger bag she finished for her granddaughter.  The colors were stunning!

Happy knitting through the storm tomorrow and get ready for battle!

Game time

Announcing The Battle of the Soxes!

A couple weeks ago, Diana sent me this link describing Sock Wars, an assassin game played with knitting.  I innocently remarked that it would be so much fun to play our own version here.  Before I knew it, not only were the Knit at Nighters ready for battle, but a lovely shop in Missouri, One City Market, had asked to join as well.  Our game was born!

I'll explain registration and guidelines in a moment, but first a bit of an explanation of what the game is all about and how it is played.

Remember playing assassin in school? We played with water guns.  All players signed up with the person running the game. At the start of the game, each player is given the name of their first target. While they are trying to "kill" their target, another player is on their heels, trying to "kill" them. When you do finally get your target, they are out of the game and must hand over the name of the player they were trying to hunt down.  You now must attempt to assassinate this new target, all while hoping the assassin on your case is not very good at their job.  The last player alive wins.

Now, we take out the water guns and replace them with knitting needles and a sock pattern. Same concept, but now, you are killing with hand knit socks.

Again, you sign up with the person running the game (that would be me, and no, I can't play).  Along with your name, you submit your sock size. When the battle begins, each player will be knitting a pair of socks for their assigned target.  As soon as you deliver your socks, your target is dead (but they will have warm feet).  Your target now sends you the name of their target, along with the deadly socks they had been knitting (without the needles - slip them on a scrap bit of yarn).  As soon as you receive the new target information and socks in progress you knit as fast as you can in order to kill your second target.

On the game goes until one knitter remains - our champion.  One City Market and The Knitting Experience Café are donating prizes for the winner, as well as special contests throughout the game, such as most creative kill. Details to come on that.

Now for registration and the guidelines.

Any knitter brave enough to take on the challenge is welcome and encouraged to join!

To register, you must email me at battle@theknittingexperience.com.

Include your name, email address, snail mail address, and shoe/sock size.

You have two weeks to register.  After that, Peter and I will make randomly generated target assignments.  Your target and their information will be emailed to you prior to the start date.  We will also let you know recommended yarn and needle size.  The actual pattern will not be released until 11:59pm on Feb 1st - the beginning of the battle.

If/when you die, you must inform me via email at battle@theknittingexperience.com of the exact time of your death (when you received your socks). Any fun details of how it happened will be greatly appreciated.  You must also let me know that you have passed along your socks in progress and target information to your assassin so that the game can continue.

General guidelines:

The game only works if everyone knits.

Everyone must knit the pattern announced for the game to the specifications outlined on the pattern.  While you cannot simplify the pattern to save time, you can embellish to express your inner assassin style.

You are on your knitter's honor to accept your death with grace and to get your socks in progress to the new assassin as soon as possible.

You must inform me of your death as soon as possible.

Any questions, suggestions, assassination updates must be sent to battle@theknittingexperience.com.  (This rule is to help preserve my sanity.)

Creativity in knitting and killing is encouraged.

So tell your knitting friends, sign up, and get ready to kill!

Playing catch up

I've been neglecting the blog the past few days while I work on some year-end business and an exciting new knitting adventure (details to come very soon.)

But, there has been plenty of knitting and crocheting happening that I've been wanting to share.

Marcia was in on Tuesday and brought her finished felted bag.  She ended up combining Cascade 220 and a strand of one of our fashion yarns that has just a hint of gold. The result is stunning and she even offered to let me borrow it for a store sample. Thank you!!

IMG_2927
Joannie, also a Tuesday regular, finished her Lorna's Laces socks in the Hawaii colorway.
IMG_2932
Michele has been incredibly busy making baby sweaters for friends AND this gorgeous weater for her husband.  The yarn is Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in the Motherlode colorway. Oh, and see those pools of color on the arms?  You can't tell from this picture, but they both happen to fall exactly at the elbows!
IMG_2934
Paul of Red Dragon Toys was in before Christmas wearing the Dr. Who scarf his wife made for him (after finishing one for their son!).  Sorry to only be sharing this now, but he was on a holiday shopping mission, and I didn't want to spoil the surprise.
IMG_2758
Knitting was everywhere Thursday night.
IMG_2937IMG_2938
IMG_2940IMG_2941
Patti finished her Noro socks.

IMG_2942
Amber finished knitting her first sweater!! Congrats!
IMG_2943

And both Patti and Mindy have been working on their Celtic Totes for the Knit Along.
IMG_2920IMG_2935
We just got in a few more copies of the Winter '07 Interweave Knits that has the pattern.

And I've been knitting too!

I'm almost done with my second Noro sock.

IMG_2945
Seamed up Peter's sweater (no pic yet) and just have to add the neck.

Cast on for a pair of fingerless mitts - the pattern is Dashing from knitty.
IMG_2946
And I started knitting with my handspun!!!  I'm working on an afghan so I have lots of spinning ahead of me.

My back hurts and I don't care

My back hurts and I don't care

The weather was beautiful today - warm, sunny- and I spent the whole afternoon inside spinning.  A tiny voice in my head kept saying I should be outside enjoying the heat wave. As a nod to the voice, I threw the children and dog outside, and settled in for a few hours of spinning. Once I finally got up from the wheel, I realized that my back ached. This happens more often than not since my surgery, and especially when I am in one position for too long.  I resolved to give it a rest for the night, but I'm already plotting to fill another bobbin after I finish this post.  I'm pretty confident that I have my priorities straight.

Today was the first day that I plied yarn.  What a rush!

The start was slow when I realized that the lazy kate I borrowed didn't fit my bobbins.  But, I was VERY determined today.  So I fashioned my own lazy kate:

IMG_2922
I found the idea on the web.  You take a shoe box and long metal knitting needles.  Jab a couple holes and you are good to go.

Check out my plied yarn:
IMG_2925
The fiber was a Christmas present from Peter and the boys.  Connor picked the colorway and cheered me on throughout the day.

Saturday was equally as busy, but with knitting at the shop.  I've been working on the second of my Noro socks and Patti came in with her first Noro sock finished.
IMG_2916
She was actually there to knit on her Celtic Tote for the Knit Along organized by Mary Ellen and Mindy.
IMG_2917
I believe that Mary Ellen has made the most progress and is almost done with one side.  She is helping everyone navigate the pattern.
IMG_2920
Betsy and Pam kept us company.
IMG_2918
Kim, who just started coming to Knit at Night (Hi Kim!), brought Liz to knit with us.  Liz had an incredible fair isle hat to show.
IMG_2919
And Sandy made up for missing KAN by hanging out for the afternoon. She just taught herself to knit socks on 2 circular needles.  Yay Sandy!
IMG_2915
Oh, a little shop news I forgot to mention.  The new class schedule is now posted and we are taking registrations.

Although I promised to get the Spunky Eclectic color of the month yarn for January up on the online store, we have already sold out!  Anyone who asked for a skein to be reserved, not to worry, we have it for you.  And for those who love the color (Thin Ice) as much as I do, Amy is working on more.  Let me know if you'd like to reserve a skein.

We think we KAN and we did

We think we KAN and we did

The snow gods relented and Knit At Night was packed.  Thanks everyone for a fabulous evening, great stories (Lesley), and entertaining conversation.

Oh, and there was knitting.

Lesley finished the 6? month scarf out of Debbie Bliss Donegal Tweed Chunky.  We were so proud.
IMG_2896
Patti showed off some Spunky Jaywalkers.
IMG_2897
Jerri had some wonderfully pink socks:
IMG_2898
Sara knit me an Odessa hat as a store sample.  She used one skein of Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino. Isn't it lovely?
IMG_2902IMG_2903
I finished and just had to wear my new Citrus Yoke Pullover from the Winter '07 Interweave Knits. I used Blue Sky Alpaca Worsted Hand Dyes. It is yummy.
IMG_2906
I was absolutely thrilled to see the sweater Diana brought in.  She made my Swing Jacket from Soft and Simple Knits.  Thanks Diana!
IMG_2891
And to make the night even better, Amy brought the Spunky Color of the Month - Thin Ice - in Skinny Sock.
IMG_2899
I'll have it available on the website soon... I promise... I'm just too sleepy tonight.  But, you can call the shop to reserve a skein.  They are 15% off for the month of January.

Resolutions

Resolutions

It's that time.  When we look back at the year past, assess our journey, and make a few resolutions to guide us into the new year.

Last year, I decided to focus on mindful knitting and on challenging myself to tackle new techniques.  Little did I realize exactly what shape those resolutions would take.

I did do a lot of mindful knitting over the course of the year.  With three family members becoming ill,  there were many times that I was thankful to be able to clear my head with the comforting rhythm of the needles.

And I definitely upped my fiber skills.  I am now completely in love with spinning, the magic loop, and intricate lace.

What about this year? The regular, predictable resolutions are definitely on the list. For instance, I resolve to finally finish Peter's sweater. The sleeves are sitting in my lap right now.  Only a few rows left.

IMG_2879

Just praying that it fits.  I have checked and double checked, but it would be just like a 2+ year in the making sweater to not fit.  Well, he's wearing it regardless. Try not to snicker if you see him out in an odd looking mass of grey stst.

My real resolution for the year is more of a guiding theme, than an actual list.  I want 2008 to be about finding joy.  Joy in trying a new pattern, joy in a new yarn or color, joy meeting new knitters and in sharing laughs with dear friends.

Yes, I'm even trying to find joy in the never-ending snow.  Tessa and Alec helped with that mission today.

IMG_2874IMG_2875
IMG_2878
Don't you love his hat? Made by Becka out of Noro Silk Garden.

And the wonderful knitters who come sit on the Big Red Couch always bring me joy.  Such as Lesley's adorable mittens:
IMG_2871
Or Betsey's hilarious unfeltable "felted" mitten.

Happy 2008 everyone!
